Confession Time

I must admit. . . I was late to the Lizzo train. And not just a little late. I was seriously late. Like the-train-had-left-the-station-and-was-halfway-to-its-destination late.

And I must also admit. . . that at first, I didn’t get this celestial being we all know as Lizzo. Even after all the praise, I didn’t get it. Even after all the hype from her peers, I didn’t get it. And even after the repeated standing ovations she continuously received, I still didn’t get it.

Truth is, I was orbiting in a completely different solar system than the star that is Lizzo.

But not anymore.

First, she pulls you in with her catchy beats, then she slays with her uplifting lyrics of self-love.

She Never Gave Up

After her father’s sudden passing, a difficult bout with depression and dropping out of college, Lizzo was determined to “make it” in the music industry. Lizzo slept in her car for a year (including Thanksgiving) before catching her big break. Now that’s some serious dedication.

2. She Reminds Us to Love the Skin We Are In

From penning self-love anthems to showcasing dancers of all body types, Lizzo constantly reminds us, women, that we are more than what society or our community may deem us. Who says bikinis and lingerie are only reserved for women of a certain weight and size?!

3. She Kept Pushing

A classically trained flutist, early on Lizzo was told that adding the flute to her rapping + singing act would “kill her career”. Spoiler Alert: Sasha, the name Lizzo has affectionately given her flute, has her own Instagram account which boasts over 300K followers and growing. No life support needed here.

4. She’s a Motivator

Ladies we’ve all been there. . . We’ve all felt shitty after a relationship and we’ve all been haunted by our insecurities. Lizzo lights a spark under our ass, to stand tall, move on and soar to greater heights. And just when you think you’ve lost your way, she steps right back in to remind us that we are “That bitch!” Talk about Girl Power!

5. She Got the Last Laugh

Called a “fat ass” every day from 5th grade to graduation, Lizzo has gone on to win 3 Grammys and was named Time Magazine’s “Entertainer of the Year”. Take that!

1. We are both named "Melissa"

2. We are both from Houston (in fact, her high school band was a customer of mine in my former corporate life)

3. We both played instruments in the school band.
